We were blessed on Sunday afternoon with a wonderful all-Gershwin concert from Talman Welle. First off was an exciting arrangement of I Got Rhythm for solo piano, followed by 4 Gershwin favorites with concert-style singing by Michelle Abad. It’s a rare treat to hear these works, more commonly heard in the jazz idiom, as full-on concert music. The piano arrangements were orchestral in feel, full and colorful, which blends nicely with the final piece on the program–Gershwin’s piano concerto in F transcribed for piano solo by Grace Castagnetta–What an amazing feat of strength and endurance! And to top it all off the entire concert, at Welle’s request, was performed on our Yamaha CF3 which lended itself very well to the bright, bombastic sounds of Gershwin.
